World Championships, Houston, Texas USA
In August 2024, the journey began for these teams, and their performances in the season were rewarded with progression to the World Championships.
Our FIRST Tech Challenge Team, 12993 RoboKings Aurum travelled to the World Championships of Robotics in the George R. Brown Convention Centre External link in Houston. Nine Students and two teachers were excited to experience the vibe at an International Event, and have some amazing experience before the event started including:
- visit NASA and the Johnson Space Centre, with a special session at the Control Centre, which showed all components of the Moon landing, along with a private session with a working Aerospace Engineer who heads the Artemis project.
- attend a US Basketball game between the Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets,
- visit Keemah Pier,
- shopping at Galleria Shopping Centre and the Bass Pro Shop
- School visits to St Johns, Houston, Friendswood Community School, and San Jacinto College
- Sightseeing in and around Houston, including the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park
...along with much more!
But once the World Championships began, we were busy being the best we could be.
ASIAN PACIFIC OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - FTC
We were extremely proud to have two teams compete at the Asian Pacific Open Championships, which was held at the Macquarie University, Sydney in July.
This event is always heaps of fun, and a great way to end the robotics season for us. We got to catch up with other teams from around the globe, make new friends and strengthen existing ones.
It was a truly amazing experience and effort for these team, particularly for our 18439 RoboKings Thorium, as for many of them it was their first robotics event. Mr Prestwidge was able to come and enjoyed immersing himself in the world of robotics.
Our teams compete in FIRST Tech Challenge External link – students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
Robots are built from a reusable platform and are coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Along with this, teams are required to demonstrate a level of commitment to both technical and non-technical outreach. This year we had two teams compete in FTC
As we hit August the robotics vibe turned up a notch. It was time to form teams for the new season. With many of our senior students graduating, fresh faces joined the pack. Two FTC teams and three FLL teams were registered, and the work begun.
