World Championships, Houston, Texas USA

In August 2023, the journey began for these teams, and their performances in the season were rewarded with progression to the World Championships.

20 students and 5 teachers spent 16 days together in the USA competing at the World Championships of Robotics in the George R. Brown Convention Centre in Houston.

The group were lucky enough to arrive in time to have some experiences before going into the competition

  • to witness a total solar eclipse of the sun,

  • visit NASA and the Johnson Space Centre,

  • attend a baseball game between the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros,

  • visit Keemah Pier and feed stingrays,

  • shopping at Galleria Shopping Centre

  • School visits to St Johns, Houston and Friendswood Community School.

  • Visit the Museum of Natural Science

  • Bechtel Industry Visit

...along with much more!

But once the World Championships began, we were busy being the best we could be.

CSC RoboRoyals

Zane, Will, Harry, Lachy, Elora, Isabel and Sonali are a team of current Year 8 and 9 students who collectively are the amazing members of RoboRoyals. This team has just returned from the FIRST Lego League World Championships held in Houston, Texas, USA, where they competed with 152 teams around the World. They progressed as 1 of the 2 teams that were sent to represent Australia at this competition.

This competition consists of three major components

  • Robot Design and Performance

  • Innovation Project

  • Core Values

And this team shone in all three. Being awarded the maximum board points of 550 on their last run for the competition, they secured 4th position for Robot Performance.

After receiving amazing feedback on their Innovation project, LiveVR, and teamwork, they received the 1st Place trophy for Gracious Professionalism. Along with this, Elora also received an individual Gracious Professional Pin by one of the judges.

It was a truly amazing experience and effort for this team. CSC RoboRoyals would also like to give a shout-out to the two primary campus STEMINA teams, in particular STEMINA Teal, who attended Nationals within them and have inspired and supported them along the way.

FIRST Tech Challenge – students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.

Robots are built from a reusable platform and are coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming. Along with this, teams are required to demonstrate a level of commitment to both technical and non-technical outreach.

This year, CSC was proud to have two teams progress to represent Australia at the World Championships. Four teams from Australia made up part of the 231 teams from around the World.

Our Teams

12993 RoboKings Aurum – Tinzen, Lotus, Dakoda, Riley, Rafael, Matthew, Tinko, Grace and Sean.

Returning with three rather large trophies, this team was amazing!

As part of the Ochoa division, they finished as 2nd Wining Alliance Captains at the end of Qualifiers after winning 9/10 of their matches.

During alliance selection, rather than captain their own team, they decided to align with the 1st Winning Alliance. This group went on to win their division, and then to win the semi-final, giving their team a spot in the final game at World Championships. In a tie-breaking round and a very tight game, they finished the Championships in 2nd Place.

They were awarded trophies for

  • 1st Winning Alliance

  • 1st Innovate Award

  • Championships Finalist Alliance.

Tinko was also recognised with a Gracious Professionalism badge from one of the Judges.

15145 RoboKings Onyx – Elliott, Laurence, Dean and Jackson.

A small team with three rookies to this competition, did an amazing job through regionals and nationals to gain a position at Worlds.

As part of the Franklin division, they ended 14th from 56 teams, with 7 wins from 10 games. A great effort. They were awarded a plaque for 2nd place Innovate award in the Franklin division.

Both teams would also like to give a shout-out to our third CSC FTC team - 18439 RoboKings Mercury- who attended the national event in Sydney and were awarded the Think Award for their amazing efforts. We can’t wait to see what these students can bring to the next season!

A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!

We would also like to say a HUGE thank you to all our sponsors and their support for both teams:

RoboRoyals: Harmac Automotive, Plumbers Queensland, AdventureMed, Bosch Australia, and Modern Teaching Aids.

RoboKings: Bosch Australia, MPE Motorcycle Suspension Specialists, Manufacturing Excellence Forum, Bollé Safety, Total Tools Morayfield, and Alspec.
