Secondary guidance officers

​Guidance Officers are Classified Officers, like Heads of Department, and as such have additional responsibilities and accountabilities. They provide a confidential service for personal counselling, career guidance and counselling, and general information provision. Their focus is primarily student orientated, but parents and staff can access these supports where time permits.

Guidance

Assisting students at all year levels to identify / clarify personal, educational and career goals.

Assisting students in decision-making processes such as subject selection, subject changes, course selection via school, private providers, TAFE and university.

Counselling

Empowering clients to resolve personal issues that prevent them from actualising their full potential.

Counselling may include: Emotional problems; family conflict; grief; stress management; self-concept / self-esteem; depression; anxiety; medical and health problems; discrimination /harassment/bullying; conflict resolution and mediation / restorative practices; behaviour modification and anger management; abuse and trauma; improving communication.

Information Provision

Most information these days is online via dedicated websites and private provider websites, however Guidance Officers may assist is navigation around these sites and direction to pertinent details.

A dedicated Careers and Personal Services information area is provided in the waiting area of the Guidance Officer Rooms that is regularly updated and resourced.

This is available for students, parents and staff to access at any time. Information from universities, TAFE, local support groups, community agencies and services, QCAA, QTAC, Education Queensland – all can be located here.

Programs

Time Management and Study Skills; Personal Development (e.g. Rock & Water, Boys2YoungMen, Girls Groups etc); Transition between Year Levels; Social Skilling; Career Development / Career Education.

Psychoeducational assessment and advocacy for Special Needs students through the Educational Adjustment Profiling process (Verification).

Referral of students and families to outside agencies where appropriate / as necessary.

Assistance with Chancellor State College formal Complaints Management process – Putting Things Right.

The Secondary Campus Guidance Officers are available five days a week and appointments can be booked via email, phone or in person via the administration office where appointments are managed – phone 5453 3222.
