Chancellor's award winning P-9 curriculum represents a sequence of carefully planned and balanced learning experiences designed to meet the current and future needs of our students. It is grounded in student focused educational philosophy and practice, responsive to individual student needs, as well as being rich in real-life significance.
Chancellor implements the National Australian Curriculum in all learning areas including English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, Health and Physical Education, The Arts (including visual arts, drama, music, dance and media), LOTE (Japanese from Year 3) and Technology.
Specialist teachers are employed to deliver lessons in LOTE, Music and Physical Education.
A range of excursions and incursions are utilised to provide opportunities to consolidate and extend the learning. Students in Prep to Year 5 participate in swimming lessons in Term 4 each year to support the HPE curriculum. Year 6 students participate in a surf skills program during Term 4. Students in Years 5 and 6 participate in a yearly camp to develop a range of skills including independence, leadership and resilience in an extra-curricula environment.
Numeracy
At Chancellor State College, numeracy learning is focused in real world contexts whilst ensuring basic mathematical concepts are addressed. To this end, ours is a program of spiraling skill development. The ultimate aim of our approach to numeracy is to embed within students a competent set of numeracy skills whilst encouraging them to think numerically within a range of deep and challenging contexts.
Information Communication Technology (ICT)
We have invested heavily in ICT resources to enrich the learning opportunities for all students. Our futures-focused curriculum is enhanced through the use of digital resources, both at school and on-line, to enable our students to engage in relevant 21st century learning.
Key Learning Areas
English
The English Curriculum is organised into three interrelated strands that support students' growing understanding and use of Standard Australian English. Together the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking and writing. Language elements such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary are developmentally sequenced within the strands.
The three strands are: Language:
- knowing about the English language
- Literature: understanding, appreciating, responding to, analysing and creating literature
- Literacy: expanding the repertoire of English usage.
Mathematics
Mathematics is designed to create students who are confident, creative users and communicators of mathematics, able to investigate, represent and interpret situations in their personal and work lives and as active citizens. Students will develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency with processes, and are able to pose and solve problems. They are encouraged to recognise connections between the areas of mathematics and other disciplines and appreciate mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline to study. Underpinning all concepts are Mathematical proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning.
The Mathematics Curriculum is arranged in three strands:
- Number and Algebra
- Measurement and Geometry
- Statistics and Probability
Science
The Science curriculum provides students with understanding, knowledge and skills through which they can develop a scientific view of the world. Students are challenged to explore Science, its concepts, nature and uses through clearly described inquiry processes. The Science curriculum guides students through the biological, chemical, physical, earth and space sciences.
Science has three interrelated strands:
- Science Understanding
- Science as a Human Endeavour
- Science Inquiry Skills
HASS – Humanities and Social Sciences
The HASS Curriculum for the Humanities and Social Sciences encompasses the knowledge and understandings of history, geography, civics and citizenship, and economics and business. It gives students a deep understanding of the world they live in from a range of perspectives, past and present, and encourages them to develop an appreciation and respect for social, cultural and religious diversity.
The subject provides students with the skills, behaviours and capabilities that will equip them to face challenges in their lifetime and to participate in and contribute to the wellbeing and sustainability of the environment, the economy and society. Through studying Humanities and Social Sciences, students are given opportunities to develop their ability to question, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, make decisions and adapt to change.
Technology
The Australian Curriculum: Technologies incorporates two distinct but related subjects:
- Design and Technologies, in which students use design thinking and technologies to generate and produce designed solutions for authentic needs and opportunities
- Digital Technologies, in which students use computational thinking and information systems to define, design and implement digital solutions.
The Technologies curriculum aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure that, individually and collaboratively, students:
- investigate, design, plan, manage, create and evaluate solutions
- are creative, innovative and enterprising when using traditional, contemporary and emerging technologies, and understand how technologies have developed over time
- make informed and ethical decisions about the role, impact and use of technologies in the economy, environment and society for a sustainable future
- engage confidently with and responsibly select and manipulate appropriate technologies − materials, data, systems, components, tools and equipment − when designing and creating solutions
- critique, analyse and evaluate problems, needs or opportunities to identify and create solutions.
Health and Physical Education (HPE)
Specialist teachers deliver year level programs to develop specific movement skills as well as allowing students to participate in a range of physical activities including surf skills/swimming programs, interschool sport and sports excellence programs. Personal Development and Health is promoted across the school through our Positive Behaviour Program and aspects are also integrated into the classroom program.
Languages – Japanese
Japanese is taught in Years 3-6 and continues into Junior Secondary. Students regularly participate in cultural activities linked to their study of language and also have the opportunity to socialise with Japanese exchange students when they visit our school.
The Arts
Through Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Art students express and communicate what it is to be human and develop, share and pass on understandings of ourselves, our histories, our cultures. The Arts are incorporated into Units of Work across all year levels.
Specialist Music teachers deliver class lessons for all Preparatory to Year 6 classes. Additionally, students have the opportunity to be a part of Instrumental Music program including strings, brass and woodwind. We also have our own school band that showcases at our school assemblies and special events throughout the year.
