Unit Outline

In studying this unit, students begin to unravel the nature of matter at a microscopic level and how materials can be manipulated for different purposes.  Students will become acquainted with the atomic basis of matter, understand why chemicals react to produce new substances and develop practical skills in scientific investigation.  Students will plan and conduct extended investigations into the nature and properties of matter, revealing the world of chemical bonds and reactions.  This unit involves students as researchers, scientists and communicators as they investigate their material world.

    Term 2, 2009 - Globalisation
Cool Visit elearn to find more detail and copies of tasks and worksheets.

    Unit Outline

The students of today live in an increasingly inter-related, “globalised” world.  Information travels in milliseconds via the internet, SMS messages, live television and more.  Life and friendships are lived out through “networking sites” such as Facebook, Twitter and MSN.  Major issues can no longer be solved through local measures alone, with global cooperation needed to address world changing issues such as climate change, desertification, terrorism, free trade between nations and much, much more.  The Global Financial Crisis serves to show the interconnected nature of our economic systems.  To survive in this increasingly “globalised” world, young people need to be aware of the issues and able to take informed and effective action.  This unit therefore aims to inform students regarding the globalised nature of their world, provide insight into issues such as the gap between rich and poor, and lead them to being able to take actions to address issues facing our globalised world.
